Getting started

Local video

Why OBEATR never hosts videos, and how to play a video game with a file from your own device.

OBEATR never uploads, hosts, streams or resolves videos. A video game contains only a beat map and a link to the public page where the video came from. To play, you choose the video file yourself, and your browser plays it directly from your device. The file never leaves your computer.

How to play a video game

  1. Open the game. Before it starts, you see the source (the domain, with a link), the expected length, and a note that OBEATR does not host videos.
  2. Get the video from the source page yourself.
  3. Choose Choose video file and select the file.
  4. Play. The session starts only after you have picked a file, so cancelling does not use up a play.

Use a format your browser can play, such as MP4 or WebM. If the browser cannot read the file, you will see a message and can pick another one.

Length check

The game stores the length of the creator's video. If your file's length differs by more than one second, you get a warning showing both lengths, because the beats may be out of sync. You can still choose Use anyway. If the game has no stored length, no check is made.

Folder and resume

Supported browsers can remember a file or a video folder, so OBEATR can find a matching video automatically. This also stays on your device. If the browser does not allow access or the file was moved, simply choose it again.

The source_url of a game is only an attribution: a public link to where the video can be found. It is not a playable source. Creators enter the source page and select their own file when creating a game, which is also how the length is read.

Use the same video that the creator used. A different cut or edit will not line up with the beats.

For creators

In the editor you select your local file for the preview. Beat analysis also runs in your browser, on your device. See the video editor and the FAQ if a video does not play.
